1. Many SMEs are concerned about going online or participating in social media because they are not familiar with the common apps used on mobile these days.<br />
2. Some business owners make a swift decision to go online and rely on bits and pieces of comments from people they know who operate in the field.<br />
3. Some business owners believe that completely outsourcing social media to an agency will bring sustainable revenue.<br />
<br />
The first is motivated by fear, which can be solved by knowledge. The second is a case of *knowing a bit of everything can be a dangerous thing*. The third is basically outsourcing responsibility. For 2 and 3, the solution is taking responsibility to learn more of the online market and aligning the implications to the business.<br />
<br />
<b>Social media is a communications channel</b> where businesses can extend their marketing efforts through to the online world. <b>Social media is not *the strategy*</b>, it's a channel to implement a strategy - carefully examined and deliberated. An <b>entire review </b>of the business process, sales cycle, customer behaviour online and onsite (to name a few) <b><i>needs </i></b>to be done and documented to have great clarity of the processes that need to be implemented before and during an online launch. Knowledge of the online industry is important. I encourage business owners to invest in learning about e-commerce:<br />
<br />
1. To be able to <b>ask the right questions</b> when talking to agencies.<br />
2. To be able to <b>critically assess</b> the suggested platforms, web apps, website features, technologies, etc.<br />
3. To be able to <b>understand the work</b> that needs to be done and the time it would take to do it.<br />
4. To be able to <b>engage effectively</b> with their contractor/employee/agency partner when things go wrong because there could be things that may go wrong along the process.<br />
5. To be able to <b>embrace the process </b>of trial and error, experimentation and constant improvement in the online marketing efforts.<br />
<br />
Social media or having a website is not a guaranteed success story. Online marketing is a high-execution, highly coordinated activity that relies on many factors. A few key factors are:<br />
<br />
1. Knowledgeable staff/contractors/agencies<br />
2. *Involved* business owner<br />
3. Sharing of knowledge and information all throughout the process<br />
<br />
The most successful businesses I worked with all involved <b>highly engaged business owners</b> - taking the lead in strategy formulation and initiating discussions and sharing knowledge and information with their partner agencies.<br />

The most obvious benefit is "personalized" search. Google has a huge array of services (most are free and very useful even to small business owners). These services include Gmail, Search, Blogger, Youtube, Places, Picasa, Google + etc. If you have a Google account, you only need 1 login username and password to access the rest of the Google services. Google says that when you have integrated accounts, its computers can tailor a better service for you. The Google computers can easily predict what you mean when you search for "Dunedin" - as a place in New Zealand or as a place in Florida. The computers will view a history of your previous searches to give you a search result that most likely fits best what you need. Interesting? Some find it scary - giving too much power to Google, easily. The reality is, this type of tracking has been existent for a while now... </div>

The question remains for small businesses in NZ - Does Facebook help promote your business? My quick answer? YES. It doesn't even matter if you have a small business or a local business. Let me explain:<br />
<br />
1. Facebook is not a direct selling tool. So if you think you're going to get sales directly from promoting your product and services on your Facebook walls, you are mistaken. <b>Facebook is a customer management tool</b>. Creating a Facebook page for your business is like creating a channel to engage with your customers directly. It's saying to your customers 'you are available' to attend to their questions even 'after sales'. Facebook is a great customer service tool.<br />
<br />
2. The goal of a Facebook fan page is not to get thousands of random followers. This is where 'quality' of fans is better than quantity.<b> Quality fans</b> provide relevant and useful feedback to your posts.<br />
<br />
3. If you want to target 'acquiring' fans, then you need to offer a creative promotional programme. You need to offer a 'carrot' to get people to LIKE your page. However, I must point out that there's no stopping these fans to UNLIKE your page once the promotion is over. So the challenge is to really keep connecting to your fan base and keep posting relevant information.<br />
<br />
4. Focus on<b> Social Score</b>. Facebook has its own algorithm. It only pushes feeds from your page to your fans' wall if your fan has established a connection with you by 'liking' your posts, 'commenting' on your posts or 'sharing' your posts. If your fans do not contribute and participate on your wall, Facebook detects that your fan-to-fan page connection is 'shallow' and Facebook would automatically push other feeds to your fans' wall.<br />
<br />
5. Facebook is a just another 'channel' yes. However, millions of people use it everyday. It's a channel you can not afford to miss. You'd need to have a good strategy on how to use it.
